Review NANCY

NANCY (カオス) is a truly captivating, if occasionally unsettling, read. From the moment I picked it up, the cover art – that seemingly simple yellow, later revealed to be far more symbolic – hinted at the complex and layered narrative within. The book isn't a straightforward whodunit, although the murder of Tan certainly provides the central plot point. Instead, it's a deep dive into the fractured psyches of those surrounding him, a character-driven exploration of guilt, betrayal, and the slipperiness of truth itself.

Budert-Waltz’s writing style is sharp and evocative, almost poetic at times. She paints vivid pictures of the characters' internal worlds, making their anxieties, obsessions, and manipulations feel palpable. The shifting first-person perspectives are a brilliant choice, pulling the reader directly into the chaos and forcing them to question the reliability of every narrator. Each chapter offers a new perspective, a new piece of the puzzle, often contradicting what came before. This non-linear structure is undeniably effective in creating a sense of disorientation and unease, mirroring the instability of the characters' lives and mental states.

While this fractured narrative works beautifully in building suspense and highlighting the unreliable nature of memory and perception, it’s also what might deter some readers. The deliberate ambiguity and opaque storytelling demand patience and a willingness to embrace the unsettling. At times, I found myself yearning for a bit more clarity, for a firmer hand guiding me through the labyrinth of conflicting narratives. A few secondary characters felt somewhat underdeveloped, leaving me wanting to know more about their motivations and backstories.

However, the strengths of NANCY far outweigh its weaknesses. The exploration of mental health, particularly the way various forms of mental illness manifest in the characters’ actions and perceptions, is handled with a sensitivity and nuance that I found incredibly compelling. The atmospheric descriptions, particularly the recurring imagery of rain-soaked Tokyo, add another layer of depth to the story, contributing to its overall unsettling beauty. The cultural blending of Japanese aesthetics and Western storytelling creates a truly unique atmosphere that is both familiar and refreshingly strange.

The ending, while perhaps not offering all the answers in a neat and tidy package, is both shocking and satisfying. It leaves the reader with a lingering sense of unease and plenty of food for thought long after the final page is turned. It's a testament to Budert-Waltz's skill that the conclusion feels both inevitable and unexpected, leaving a lasting impression that far surpasses a simple "whodunnit" resolution. While it’s not a light read, and certainly demands active engagement from the reader, NANCY (カオス) is a powerful and unforgettable psychological drama that will stay with you long after you finish it. It's a testament to the power of well-crafted character studies and a brilliantly executed, if slightly unsettling, narrative.
